Building a Web Page

Difficulty Medium 0-25 €

Do you have some basic computer skills? Then you won't have trouble carrying out this idea. How would you feel if one day your partner tells you to visit a certain internet address where they've built a kind of 'virtual temple' for you? You surely won't forget it for a lifetime. That's exactly what we aim to do here.

The first thing we need is a bit of space on the web to host our page. There are many sites on the internet offering free space to publish your own page in exchange for hosting some small ads. If you don't like the idea of ads, you can always spend a little money and rent space from a company offering these services (hosting companies, in computer jargon). If you're not very knowledgeable about the process of building the page, you can find plenty of information online or use a program like Dreamweaver or HotMetal, which make the task much easier.

The second step is optional. It's about getting a domain because it always sounds better to say the page address is www.name.com rather than something like http://users.lycos.es/name. This operation you'll have to contract with a provider. Don't worry, it's not a difficult process and won't cost much. For about 10 or 15 euros, you can register a domain for a whole year! Additionally, domain providers usually offer help with the necessary information to associate the name with the space you use for the web. In fact, many times it's possible to contract everything with the same company, significantly reducing the 'difficulty' of the entire process.

The content of the page is up to you. Photos, writings, letters from friends... there's so much you can do! I encourage you to be clever and update the page from time to time to make the most of the surprise.

One last tip, also use the page to create games. How? By posting riddles whose answers lead to completing the address of some page on the site where another little surprise awaits. As always, let your imagination run wild.
